This listing is for a rare antique Anthony Imbert Lithograph. It shows a scene from the 1825 Grand Canal Celebration parade in New York City in 1825. The parade was to celebrate the opening of the Erie Canal. This particular lithograph shows a hook & ladder company. There is an American flag atop the ladders along with a banner printed with their motto "We Raze To Save". Based on our research, the artist for this piece was Dominico Canova (1800-1868). The lithograph measures 8 1/2" x 14 1/2" inches including the wooden frame. It is in good overall condition with foxing and creases. The bottom left reads 'Litho Prefs of Imbert & Co New York'. There is a piece of paper taped to the back that reads:
"Outsatnding and important image from the very beginning of American Lithography. "Pioneer Lithographer of New York City", says Harry Peters, author of several books on American lithography, of Anthony Imbert (1794-1834). Folky and minutely detailed lithograph depicting the "Grand Canal Celebration" Parade for the opening of the Erie Canal. Last framed circa 1940.
"Hook & Ladder Company" Wonderful and folky 1825 lithograph by Anthony Imbert, depicting the Hook & Ladder Company as part of the Parade in New York City. November 4, 1825. Pictured are four praqncing horses, front two with top-hatted riders, pulling a long wagon with five dressed firemen, two atop their ladders showing their fire tools. Above the ladders a stars & stripes flag is proudly displayed along with a company logo. Marked lower left is "Litho Prefs of Imbert & Co New York."
